International Teacher Exchange - One Year Programme

The International Teacher Exchange is a reciprocal exchange in which teachers exchange their teaching positions, accommodation and sometimes vehicles with an overseas teacher for one year.

1. Who can apply from within New Zealand

2. Applying from overseas for a Teacher Exchange to New Zealand

1. Who can apply from within New Zealand

All applicants must hold full New Zealand teacher registration, be employed in a permanent full-time position within an institution, have a minimum of 5 years "educator" experience by the beginning of the proposed exchange period and have a recent record of continuous service.

Programme details

Teacher exchange is support by the Ministry of Education to provide opportunities for professional development of teachers through the overseas exchange experience. Teachers have the opportunity to work and live in another country for one year and to have an in-depth experience of another education system.

Programme timing

All general exchanges operate for the New Zealand school year i.e. January to December, unless variation is specifically negotiated for special purposes.

Support offered for the programme from New Zealand

International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand will provide written guidelines for exchangees and organise a pre-exchange orientation seminar. ILANZ will also support the host schools to "maintain their management structure" by providing "top up" financial assistance to any school where the teacher going on exchange holds a permanent position of responsibility and another teacher is going to "act up" to that position during the exchange (excluding private schools). Principals are currently excluded from this provision. In the event of difficulties arising during the exchange ILANZ will endeavour to assist in any way possible.

Support offered for the programme from other agencies

International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand works with an official teacher exchange organisation in each of the partner countries. Both ILANZ and our overseas counterparts have an ongoing responsibility to support the exchanges that have been negotiated..

Key participant responsibilities

There is no extra funding available to the educator from the Ministry of Education to help with the cost of going on exchange. Exchangees make their own travel arrangements and pay their own travel and basic living expenses. For most destinations, the cost of basic living is relatively comparable, but there is the factor of the greatly increased expenditure on enjoying the new location.

Exchangees obtain leave with pay from their employing authority. The exchangees receive their normal salary (including permanent management units) whilst overseas but they, and their exchange partner, work at basic scale level. The employing authority continues to pay the educator as normal.

Key school responsibilities

The host schools are a key participant and, in agreeing to have an exchangee, take on a responsibility to give support to the exchangee. Exchangees are invited by ILANZ to an orientation seminar a month or two after the start of the exchange.

Key dates for applications in New Zealand

The schemes are advertised annually from September in the Education Gazette and again the following January approximately a year, or more, ahead of the exchange period. Advertisements for specific potential overseas exchange positions will be advertised as they become available. The applications are advertised this early because the matching process itself is complex, time consuming and there is time for both exchange teachers and their schools to prepare for an exchange. Enquiries may continue to be accepted throughout the first half of the year. Those applications received early will in general have a greater chance of success.
