Foreign language assistant placements
Up to 20 French, German and Spanish Language Assistants are
employed for the academic year to assist language teachers.
They apply through their own home country, and are matched with New Zealand schools (or
groups of schools) that have applied to host.
NZ schools use the assistants as native speakers in language classes and receive a subsidy to employ them.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
A school or group of schools can make an application for a foreign
language assistant in one of the above languages.
The school(s) must be prepared to allocate some of their staffing complement to cover the position.
Who can apply from overseas?
Young graduates (under 30 years of age) meeting their own country criteria in relation to the particular International Language, and English, can apply through CIEP Email: assistant@ciep.fr.
Programme details
Appointments are for one year, with a few reappointments available for further
year, giving a maximum of two years.
Assistants are generally employed to share a group placement at up to 4 schools, with one of those
schools being technically the "employer".
There is a planned total of 15 hours class contact per week.
Programme timing
The programme operates for the New Zealand school year, which approximates to a calendar year.
Support offered for the programme from New Zealand
The school or group of schools allocate(s) 0.4 from their staffing and this is topped up by
0.2 from this programme at a salary level of step 5 of the
basic scale.
The participant pays his or her own travel to and from the employment site.
Travelling between schools is covered by a travel allowance from the
programme.
ILANZ offers an orientation programme for assistants and maintains a support presence as required.

Assistant selection is handled by the relevant overseas agencies and ILANZ.
Key participant responsibilities
The participant pays his or her own travel to and from the employment site and
is responsible for their own accommodation costs.
Schools will assist with finding suitable accommodation.

STAGE D’HIVER: For senior teachers of French

The French government is inviting three New Zealand teachers of French to attend the annual residential course to be held in Nice - International House during January 2009. The course will be for 4 weeks, not including travel time (dates still to be confirmed).
The programme focuses on various aspects of French culture and society, French language teaching methodology and includes a homestay in Nice.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
The course is intended for senior teachers of French. The applicants should have a reasonable amount of service yet to give and be New Zealand citizens

The course is held in Nice, in a homestay situation.

The course is currently annual, in January. Advertising normally commences around May each year.

Support offered for the programme from New Zealand
Relief is provided for teachers from State and integrated schools as required, although much of the course is
in the school holidays.
The programme is administered and supported by ILANZ.
Support is offered for the programme from other agencies.
The French Government will cover:
- All tuition fees
- All accommodation costs:single room in a host family – half board (weekdays)
- A subsidy of NZ$1,700 to contribute to the international airfare Auckland-Paris-Auckland
- Transfers from Nice airport
ILANZ (International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand), will provide:
- The cost of return domestic air travel from the participant’s home to Auckland
- The cost of teacher relief to cover the period away during term time (this will vary according to when a participant’s school commences next year and to allow for return travel from France).
N.B. As different teacher relief funding models apply for state, integrated and private schools, participants from private schools are not eligible for teacher relief funding under the ILANZ-Ministry of Education contract.
Key participant responsibilities
The participant organises his or her own international travel to France and Nice. Incidentals, insurances and remaining travel costs are also the participant's responsibility.
Costs to Participants: Participants should allow a minimum of $2,000 for personal expenditure.

STAGE DE NOUMEA (New Caledonia) - CREIPAC - In-service course yr 7-10
Eight teachers will be invited to attend this residential course to be held at the CREIPAC (Centre de Rencontres et d’Echanges Internationaux du Pacifique – Nouméa, new Caledonia) during the April and September/October 2009 holidays.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
This is an intensive language and culture refresher and reinforcement course for teachers of French as a foreign language (FLE – Français langue étrangère) at junior level. It will be adapted to suit the language level and professional development needs of the teachers selected.

Assistance with Costs:
The French Government will cover:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation in a host family (half boarding on weekdays – full boarding on weekends)
- A subsidy on international airfare of $300.
- Transfers from and to Nouméa airport
- Daily transfer to Nouméa city center
- Visit of the Tjibaou cultural center
International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand (ILANZ) will provide:
- The cost of return domestic air travel from the participant’s home to Auckland
N.B. As this is an intensive course, participants cannot be accompanied by partners or families.
Cost to Participants:
Participants will be required to meet:
- Cost of insurance cover
- Balance on international airfare + airport taxes (for information: average full return price estimated at NZ$ 1000 from the Air Calin website - as seen on 28th April 2009 – subject to change according to airlines airfares policies)
- One meal a day (weekdays)
- Incidental expenses.

English language assistants to French-speaking countries
26 recent graduates in French are selected for appointments as English language assistants for eight months in France, New Caledonia or French Polynesia. Participants work an 8-month school year of 12 hours per week.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
University students graduating in French from a New Zealand university can inquire about the
programme through the French Departments at their University,
or the French Embassy in New Zealand. ILANZ has only an
indirect role in this programme, and all initial inquiries
should be channelled through the above organisations.
