FUKUSHIMA PROGRAMME for NZ TEACHERS (yr 7-13)
Two secondary NZ teachers of Japanese are invited by the Prefecture of Fukushima to participate in a to a specialized “educators” programme.
Fukushima Prefecture is one of the most progressive and economically successful regions of Japan. Governor Sato is an internationalist who is determined to provide a global perspective for teachers and students in his prefecture. Fukushima blends the old and the new of Japanese culture in a diverse geographic setting reaching from the coastline of eastern Honshu to the mountain ranges of the interior. It has a proud and fascinating history reaching back over a thousand years.
Programme includes:
- Be received by the Governor of Fukushima
- Enjoy the “real” Japan through home-stay and a traditional Japanese Inn.
- Spend time at junior and senior high schools in Fukushima.
- Cultural tour and hands-on cultural activities.
- Programme concludes with 2 nights free time in Tokyo (this is at own cost.)
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
Teachers of Japanese with an interest in promoting some form of school and cultural exchange (e.g. internet, video, letter exchange or possibly sister-school exchange) with junior/senior high schools in Fukushima will be given first preference.
Who can apply from overseas?
This programme is only for New Zealand teachers of Japanese, currently in a permanent teaching position in a New Zealand school.
Programme timing
It has been offered annually for the last four years, and the September school holidays are the normal timing. Associated advertising commences in March/April.

Assistance with costs:
Fukushima Prefecture and International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand (ILANZ) will facilitate this programme by covering:
- Accommodation (except for 2 free nights in Tokyo).
- Domestic travel between Tokyo and Fukushima
- All cultural and educational visit costs
- Domestic airfare (where appropriate)
Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education will support teachers of Japanese by covering:
- Return international airfare to Japan up to $2,000.
Key participant responsibilities
- Meal costs apart from the welcome and farewell parties or meals that are not provided by homestay families.
- Costs incurred during 2-night free time in Tokyo
- Travel Insurance
Reimbursed cost to participants:
Participants will also be asked to pay approximately 80,000yen towards the cost of the programme. This amount is then reimbursed by ILANZ (direct credit) on your return from Japan.
