GERMAN STUDY

Foreign language assistant placements

Up to 20 French, German and Spanish Language Assistants are employed for the academic year to assist language teachers.
They apply through their own home country, and are matched with New Zealand schools (or groups of schools) that have applied to host. NZ schools use the assistants as native speakers in language classes and receive a subsidy to employ them.

Who can apply from within New Zealand?

A school or group of schools can make an application that would wish to utilise the skills of the assistants in one of the above languages.
The school(s) must be prepared to allocate some of their staffing complement to cover the position.

Who can apply from overseas?

Young graduates (under 30 years of age) meeting their own country criteria in relation to the particular International Language, and English, can apply through the PAD:  Pädagogischer Austauschdienst, website:  www.kmk.org/pad/home.htm

Programme details

Appointments are for one year.
Assistants are generally employed to share a group placement at up to 4 schools, with one of those schools being technically the "employer". There is a planned total of 15 hours class contact per week.

Programme timing

The programme operates for the New Zealand school year, which approximates to a calendar year.

Support offered for the programme from New Zealand

The school or group of schools allocate(s) 0.4 from their staffing and this is topped up by 0.2 from this programme at a salary level of step 5 of the basic scale.

The participant pays his or her own travel to and from the employment site.
Travelling between schools is covered by a travel allowance from the programme.

ILANZ offers an orientation programme for assistants and maintains a support presence as required.

*Please note that there will be some changes for this programme in 2010. Language Assistants will be offered an IEA (Individual Employment Agreement), which sets out conditions of employment. Please contact ILANZ for further details.

Support offered for the programme from other agencies

Assistant selection is handled by the relevant overseas agencies along with ILANZ.

Key participant responsibilities

The participant pays his or her own travel to and from the employment site and is responsible for their own accommodation costs.

Schools will assist with finding suitable accommodation.

PAD Student Scholarship to Germany (Mid-year)

Unlike all other programmes administered by ILANZ, this is a programme for students and not teachers.
It is included in our programmes because of the significant involvement of the adviser in the process, and the relationships that are fostered between the adviser, the teachers and their students in New Zealand.

Two students of German participate in an exchange to Germany.

Who can apply from within New Zealand?

A National competition is held to select finalists.
The process includes interviews by the language adviser.
Two students are selected for this PAD programme, and up to three finalists can be considered for an additional scholarship from the German-New Zealand Exchange programme. Once selected, the programme (and ILANZ) involvement extends only to the two: funding from other sources covers the further candidates.

Programme

Top academic students of German have an in-country training opportunity for four weeks.
It includes a 10-day homestay, attendance at school and cultural visits, and all as part of an international group.

It is usually in July and includes the two-week holiday period.

Eligibility

Candidates must have sat national examinations at Year 11 level the previous year, and be intending to continue with German in Year 13.
Initial selection is on the basis of the examination mark and teachers' comments, followed by an interview process to determine finalists.

The application and selection process itself is managed as a positive learning experience for all candidates and their teachers, even if not selected!

Support offered for the programme from New Zealand

Costs connected with the selection process are covered by ILANZ and the Goethe-Institut.

Support offered for the programme from other agencies

Once selected, Germany funds course fees, travel, accommodation and sundry costs.

Key dates for applications in New Zealand

The programme is extensively advertised through the language adviser channels.
