NZ Teachers of Japanese to Japan: Short Course (Japan Foundation: Annual Language Course)
Teachers of Japanese participate in a two-month training programme in Japan.
There are three programmes available at different times of the year.
The course is based around a lecture programme on methodology, Japanese culture and society, with extra curricular cultural activities including field trips, homestay programmes, visits to local schools, and cultural demonstrations.
All lectures are conducted in Japanese.
DESCRIPTION
Participants will be divided into two groups according to results of a placement test taken on their arrival in Japan:
Course A: Aims to improve the Japanese proficiency of participants and to enable them to apply their language skills to various situations and topics.
Course B: Aims to improve the Japanese proficiency of participants so that they are capable of not only daily conversation but develop more complex linguistic skills.
Cultural programme includes: Homestay programme visits to local schools, cultural demonstrations of calligraphy and other traditional arts, excursions to the theatre etc. Plus an optional field trip after the training programme.
All lectures will be conducted in Japanese.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
Japanese language teachers or teaching assistants at a high school, intermediate and primary school.
- At least 6 months experience in teaching the Japanese language
- Have proficiency in the Japanese language to JLPT Level 3 or 4
- Under the age of 35 as of December 1, 2008
Who can apply from overseas?
Each course has many participants form overseas countries.
New Zealand cannot assist with information for such applicants, who should contact their own country authorities or the Japan Foundation.

Several courses operate during the year.
All are of two months duration, and advertised annually over September/October.

EXPENSES COVERED BY THE JAPAN FOUNDATION:
- The Japan Foundation covers the return international airfare, accommodation, meals, training costs and travel insurance
N.B. : Grantees must participate in the programme as members of the group and are to attend every activity on the programme. They are not allowed to stay in Japan for any other purpose.
EXPENSES COVERED BY ILANZ- Leave on Pay Procedure:
International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand (ILANZ) will facilitate these programmes by covering the cost of teacher relief during term time.
N.B. As different teacher relief funding models apply for state, integrated and private schools, participants from private schools are not eligible for teacher relief funding under the ILANZ-Ministry of Education contract.

Japanese Teachers of Japanese to Japan: Short Course
Two Japanese nationals who are teaching Japanese in New Zealand participate in a one-month training programme in Japan from November to December.
This is an intensive one-month course in teaching methodology.
The course concentrates on writing systems, phonetics, and composition. It includes discussion, audiovisual resources and their use, through lectures and visits to institutions.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
Japanese nationals, or former Japanese nationals who are teaching Japanese in New Zealand are the target group. The Japan Foundation sets an upper age limit of 55 years of age.
Programme timing
The programme operates annually over the November/December period. Advertising is in September/October.

Teacher relief is available for State and integrated schools to release participants.
Support offered for the programme from other agencies
The Japan Foundation covers all fees, travel, accommodation, meals and sundries.

NZ teachers of Japanese to Sydney - Secondary (Y9-Y11)
(The Japan Foundation, Sydney Seminar)
The Japan Foundation, Sydney is inviting junior secondary teachers of Japanese (Y9-Y11) to attend this intensive Japanese seminar. The seminar will be for four days for the period January 2009 at The Japan Foundation, Sydney.
This seminar is for teachers who would like to upgrade their language proficiency while increasing their awareness of new methodology, including ILTL. Participants will work in a Japanese language environment suited to their level, and will have ample opportunity for networking. The seminar is targeted to teachers who need to build their language skills so they can use Japanese confidently in the classroom
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
Teachers of Japanese in New Zealand who are not native speakers are eligible to apply.
Programme timing
This is an annual April four-day course at the Sydney language centre, and is advertised in September of the preceding year.

NZ Teachers of Japanese to Sydney Years 7-10 (The Japan Foundation, Sydney September seminar)
Five teachers of Japanese (years 7-10) participate in a 4-day seminar in Sydney during the September school holidays.
The programme is in-service training, aimed at upgrading language skills and teaching methodology.
Who can apply
Teachers of Japanese in New Zealand who are not native speakers are eligible to apply.
Programme timing
During the school holiday period.

Japan Foundation Secondary School Educators Study Tour
Two New Zealand teachers (who are not teachers of Japanese) are offered an educational and cultural tour of Japan, in association with teachers from other countries.
The programme includes briefings and receptions, sightseeing, cultural experiences, and is overall a very enriching experience.
The teachers are able to increase their understanding of Japan, and contribute to the goodwill between Japan and New Zealand. Participants acquire a greater understanding of Japanese people, society and culture that is passed on to their students.
Who can apply from within New Zealand?
Recipients must be NZ citizens, teaching full time with a permanent position. The criteria for selection may vary a little from year to year. Currently they will be likely to be working in a social science area, probably in middle management, and who have demonstrated the potential to move into senior management. They should come from schools that teach Japanese, but may not have previously had a lot of contact with Japan, so they can extend their knowledge of Japan into the schools.
The Japanese authorities have an upper age limit of 50 years for this programme.
Who can apply from overseas?
Although there are people on this programme from other countries, the process is unique to each country. New Zealand cannot assist with information for teachers outside New Zealand.

ILANZ funds and operates a pre-departure briefing, and assists with some minor expenses. Necessary relief to release participants is provided to State and integrated schools.
Support offered for the programme from other agencies
All travel, international and internal in Japan, all accommodation, meals, entry fees are all covered by the Japan side.
