Based on my knowledge of Chinese and Chinese teaching, I will try my best in the position and hope to develop further during my term of office.
While I am the only adviser in Chinese, I do not work in isolation. Far from it! I consider myself part of two major teams: the ILANZ advisory team, which includes not only my colleagues in other languages, and the Chinese support team, which includes the Educational Officer of the Chinese Embassy here in Wellington and the New Zealand Chinese Language Association.
If you have any problems related to Chinese and Chinese teaching, please do not hesitate to contact me.
The support I can offer teachers of Chinese comes in various forms:
- School visits
- Information on teaching materials
- Courses, workshops and cluster meetings
- Advice (in person, by phone, by mail)
- Newsletter for teachers of Chinese
- Chinese days or camps
- Chinese teachers' register
School visits
My visits to schools are free of charge.
I can come in for a chat about
resources or specific issues and concerns. I can come in to
observe a lesson or to teach a lesson or part of it myself.
I can come for an informal chat with your students on China in English or Chinese.
I am also quite happy to do a combination of any or all of these things.
I also think that it is always a good idea to
spend five minutes with your principal and talk about Chinese
in your school.
When I am planning to visit your area I will write and offer to come to your school, but you can also contact me.
Information on teaching materials
I maintain a library of recent Chinese teaching materials
(course books, flashcards, supplementary materials, including
videos and CD-ROMs) and a collection of catalogues from
publishers and distributors.
I do my best to keep myself informed of what is available, from
where and at what cost. If you need help looking for resources
for a specific purpose, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Courses, workshops and cluster meetings
I run all different kinds of courses: I run courses and
workshops dealing with teachers' specific issues and teaching
or team-teaching their classes.
I also run courses (often together
with other advisers) on relevant topics. These courses can be
conducted in English, in Chinese or in a combination of the
two.
I also take part in cluster
meetings. Your school or cluster can invite me
or you can join a course that has
been organised through your teachers' centre or language
teachers' association.

up-coming courses or workshops.

Newsletter
The "Chinese Newsletter" produced in conjunction with the
New Zealand Chinese Language Association is generally sent to
schools three times a year.
If you teach Chinese in a NZ school but do not receive a
newsletter, it is generally for one of two reasons:
1. Your school is not on our database. We try to maintain
an up-to-date database for language teaching in New Zealand,
relying on information from Ministry of Education returns and
our own survey.
If you think our information may be out-of-date, please contact me and I'll
update the details for your school. (This may involve asking
you to complete our one page survey form).
2. The newsletter is coming to your school but not to you.
In primary and intermediate
schools, this is usually because the person in charge of
sorting the mail doesn't know who is teaching Chinese at the
school.
Please inform that person that you wish to receive mail sent to "The teacher(s)
of Chinese".
In secondary schools, this usually occurs where there are several teachers
of Chinese in the school (and only one copy of the newsletter).
Each issue of the "Chinese Newsletter" contains two parts.
The first part, the newsletter proper, contains updates on
happening relevant to the teaching of Chinese in New Zealand -
changes of personnel, curriculum and assessment issues,
resources, upcoming events, information about in-service
courses and conferences, and reports from those who have
attended them, etc.- as well as news or interest from
China.
The second part is a dossier, on a certain theme. These are either related to a
current event or to an aspect of Chinese teaching (useful
website, resource materials, reasons for learning Chinese,
etc.)

Chinese days or camps
If you are organising any Chinese days or camps, please feel free to invite me - I am happy to just be there or do some sessions with the students.
