I am the successor of Werner Nowitzki as Fachberater für Deutsch / German language adviser. I am employed by the Goethe-Institut and based at ILANZ (International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand).

I have worked in the area of DaF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) / German as a foreign language in many parts of the world, e.g. Britain, Namibia, Malaysia in different teaching positions at schools and universities. For the last eight years, I’ve been working as the German language consultant for Eastern Canada in Toronto. In between these postings I have worked as a teacher at a secondary school and a teachers’ in-service training institute in Berlin.

My particular areas of interest include communicative language teaching and learning, professional development and developing resources for the German language classroom especially the teaching of cultural aspects and current affairs

The support I can offer teachers of German comes in various forms:

School visits

My visits to schools are free of charge. I can come in for a chat about resources or schemes, or specific problems. I can come in to observe a lesson, or teach a lesson, or part of it myself. I can come in for an informal chat with your students on Germany or Berlin, in English or German, or a combination of everything. It is usually a good idea to spend five minutes with your principal and talk about the subject.

When I visit your area, I will offer to come to your school, but you can also contact me to request a school visit.

Information on teaching materials

I maintain a library of recent German teaching materials (courses books and supplementary materials, including videos and CD-ROMs) and a collection of catalogues from publishers and distributors. I do my best to keep myself informed of what is available, from where and at what cost. If you need help looking for resources for a specific purpose, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Courses, workshops and cluster meetings

I run all different kinds of courses in NZ:

Courses and workshops on a one to one, or two to one basis, working a whole day with a teacher or two teachers at their specific school, dealing with their specific issues and teaching or team-teaching their classes.

I also run courses (often together with other language specialists) on relevant topics. These courses can be in German or German immersion courses, they can be in English or partly in English.

I also take part in cluster meetings. Your school or cluster can invite me, or you can join a course that has been organised through your teachers' centre or language association.

Topics that might be popular:

  • how to deliver a German programme based on the German Curriculum
  • how to teach mixed ability and multilevel classes
  • how to teach the communicative approach
  • how to increase the time students are "online" with German language speaking
  • how to assess students' work
  • how to convince parents that German is a useful language
  • how to make lessons more interesting
  • how to reduce preparation time (how to survive).

Advice

If you are looking for advice on any matter relating to the teaching of German in New Zealand, please do not hesitate to contact me. I may not be able to help immediately but may be able to put you in touch with someone who can.

For advice on issues relating to NCEA or departmental management, contact the teacher support services at your nearest College of Education.

Newsletter

My Newsletter 'German for Kiwi's Deutsch in Neuseeland' comes in an electronic format (pdf) and is generally emailed to teachers and friends of German at least four times yearly.

The current Newsletter is available for downloading here.

If you teach German in a NZ school but do not receive a newsletter, it is generally for one of two reasons:

1. Your school is not on our database.
We try to maintain an up-to-date database for language teaching in New Zealand, relying on information from Ministry of Education returns and our own survey. If you think our information may be out-of-date, please contact me and I'll update the details for your school. (This may involve asking you to complete our one page survey form.)

2. We don't know any of your current school or private email addresses.
In this case we would ask you to provide a working email address so that you can be included in the newsletter email list. Please contact me.

German immersion days/weekends/immersion camps

Learning a foreign language means speaking this language. German Days or German Weekends might be useful opportunities to increase the oral use of German language. More information here.

Scholarships for Y12 Students of German

Society for NZ-German Student Exchange Scholarships
Every year the Society for NZ-German Student Exchange Inc (NZGSE) offers up to three scholarships for New Zealand Y12 students who are currently studying German.

Scholarship winners will spend approximately 10 weeks in Germany from the end of November to early February. The scholarship covers the cost of return air travel to and from Germany, and also includes medical / accident insurance for the duration of the scholarship. Scholarship winners will be the guests of carefully selected host families where there is a boy or girl of a similar age who they attend school with. It is expected that the students host their German student brother/sister next year.

Scholarship winners themselves are responsible for an adequate supply of pocket money during their stay, expenses in conjunction with organised trips, and for the cost of all travel in Europe.

During the visit to Germany, all scholarship winners from New Zealand and Australia meet at camp, and travel to Bonn and Berlin just prior to their departure for home. The scholarship winner must also pay for these costs

For application forms please click here.

For further information please contact me.

Pädagogischer Austauschdienst Scholarships (2 in total)
Every year the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD) offers up to two scholarships for New Zealand Y12 students who are currently studying German.

Scholarship winners will travel to Germany usually in July and spend 4 weeks in Germany. The students will stay with German families for some of the time, and attend a German language course.

They will have the opportunity to go to a German school and get to know their neighbourhood and surroundings. They will also be taken on a tour of other areas of the Federal Republic, staying at youth hostels.

The cost of the trip is free, including a small amount of pocket money
