友岡純子 (Junko Tomooka)
Hello! Konnichi-wa Minasan!
。
My name is Junko Tomooka. I am from Yokohama, Japan. I was born in this port city, brought up there and lived there most of my life. So I am proud of being a pure “Hama-kko (native to Yokohama)”.I have a long experience of teaching Japanese at Japanese high schools and also have had experience with teaching Japanese as a second language in language schools and universities. I started my advisory career in a tropical city of Brazil at the mouth of the Amazon River in 1999. I worked there for two years as an adviser for teachers of Japanese in Japanese Brazilian communities. Then I was sent to Tasmania, Australia by the Japan Foundation as a language adviser in 2003. I worked there for three years and fell in love with the work. I love meeting teachers and students, talking with them and visiting schools. I started working as a National Adviser here in New Zealand in February 2008. I am very happy to work with teachers of Japanese and looking forward to hearing from you.
The support I can offer teachers of Japanese comes in various forms:
- School visits
- Information on teaching materials
- Courses, workshops and meetings
- Advice (in person, by phone, by mail)
- Newsletter for teachers of Japanese
- Calender for 2009
School visits
My visits to schools are free of charge. I can come in for a chat about resources, course planning and documentation, or specific issues and concerns. I can come in for an informal chat with your students on Japan in English or Japanese I can come in for special events such as Japan Day or Japanese Camp.
When I am planning a visit to your area I will write and offer to come to your school, but you can also contact me to request a school visit.
Information on teaching materials
I maintain a library of recent Japanese teaching materials (courses, books and supplementary materials, including videos and CD-ROMs) and a collection of catalogues from publishers and distributors. I do my best to keep myself informed of what is available, from where and at what cost. If you need help looking for resources for a specific purpose, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Courses, workshops and meetings
I run all different kinds of courses: I have run courses and workshops on a one to one (or two) basis, working for a whole or half-day with a teacher or two in their own school, dealing with their specific issues and teaching or team-teaching their classes. I also run courses (often together with other advisers) on relevant topics. These courses can be conducted in English, in Japanese, or in a combination of the two.
Advice
If you are looking for advice on any matter relating to the teaching of Japanese in New Zealand, please do not hesitate to contact me. I may not be able to help immediately but may be able to put you in touch with someone who can.
For advice on issues relating to NCEA or departmental management, contact the teacher support services at your nearest College of Education.

Newsletter
Our Newsletter,"
" was previously posted to schools twice a year. I am going to now send you online newsletters through my distribution list and at the same time I will up-load it to my adviser’s website. You can receive email newsletters directly from me if you can not read it through the website. This could contribute a little to reducing our paper consumption.
